Surface machines use either a magnetic proprietary connector or USB-C. The magnetic tip is deliberately designed to release under strain, which is why replacements have to match not just the electrical rating but the connector generation as well.

The three checks that decide whether a charger works

  1. Voltage has to match exactly. Read the "Output" line on your original adapter.
  2. Amperage can be equal or higher. The laptop draws what it needs.
  3. Connector must fit. Barrel size in millimetres, USB-C, or a magnetic / special tip.

Frequently asked questions

Are Surface chargers interchangeable across generations?
Not fully. Magnetic connectors vary in wattage and pin arrangement; Surface Pro generations differ.

Can I charge a Surface Book through USB-C?
Only later models support it, and often at reduced speed.

Why does my Surface charge slowly?
Usually a lower-wattage adapter than the original, or a USB-C source below the required profile.
