HP publishes a 19.5V standard for many models, but the physical connector changed several times - from the classic 4.8x1.7mm small pin to the larger 7.4x5.0mm tip with a centre pin used on high-wattage machines. Both are listed below.

Three checks before you order a HP replacement

  1. Match the voltage exactly. The label on your original adapter reads something like "Output: 19.5V 3.34A". The replacement must carry the same voltage – a higher or lower figure risks no charge or a protection fault.
  2. Amperage may be equal or higher. The laptop pulls only the current it needs, so a 4.62A adapter safely replaces a 3.34A one, never the other way round.
  3. Confirm the connector. Barrel size (outer x inner diameter in mm), USB-C, or a proprietary magnetic / special tip. Measure before ordering if the listing does not state it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between HP 4.8x1.7mm and 7.4x5.0mm tips?
The larger 7.4x5.0mm tip is used on higher-wattage notebooks and includes a signal pin for smart charging identification.

Can I run a ProBook on a lower wattage adapter?
It will often charge slowly or stop under load. Match or exceed the original wattage.

My EliteBook says "plugged in, not charging". Is it the adapter?
It can be either the adapter falling below the required identification signal or the battery reaching end of life. Test with a known good unit first.
